Sugarbowl: Belgian Taps and a Knife in a Cinnamon Bun

The Sugarbowl’s famous cinnamon bun arrives with a knife stabbed straight into it, and that gesture tells you everything: this Garneau institution has zero interest in being precious. What it does have is one of the deepest beer programs in the city — a rotating universe of craft bottles and Belgian taps — poured in a room that has been the University of Alberta district’s living room for generations.

The Story

Open since 1943, the Sugarbowl has shape-shifted with every era: burger joint in the forties and fifties, coffee house through the sixties and seventies, then the bistro-pub hybrid that stuck. Television came calling — the room featured in the first season of You Gotta Eat Here! — but fame changed nothing structural: students still argue theses over pints where their professors did the same.

What to Order

The cinnamon buns are baked fresh daily in limited numbers, and when they’re gone, they’re gone — arrive early or accept your fate. Beyond the legend: proper brunch on weekends, burgers with pub conviction, and a beer list that rewards curiosity — ask what’s pouring from Belgium and follow the staff’s lead. Coffee remains serious here too; the sixties never fully left.

The Space

Warm, wooden and worn-in the way only eighty years can manage — a bohemian clutter of conversation, laptops before noon and pint glasses after. In summer the doors open toward leafy Garneau streets and the patio becomes prime real estate.

Who It’s For

Beer explorers, grad students and their supervisors, brunch loyalists, and anyone who wants a bar with more character than concept.

Good to Know

Do the cinnamon buns really sell out? Regularly — mornings are safest; weekends go fastest.

Can I book a table? It’s largely a walk-in room; brunch peak means a short, worthwhile wait.

How big is the beer list? Vast — well over a hundred craft and Belgian options at any given time.

Is it just a bar? No — it runs from morning coffee through brunch to late pints.

Is there a patio? Yes, a seasonal one that fills the moment the sun commits.

We always eat a cinnamon bun every time we come here, because it's incredibly tasty. Even though I love iced cinnamon buns, I'd still choose Sugarbowl every time. The mac and cheese was luxurious and filling. I was alrea…

I came here for breakfast, and it was very busy! But we got in fairly quickly, and our food was very tasty. The cinnamon bun was big and not like a traditional one, but still tasty!

One of my favourite restaurants and patios in Edmonton. It has a wonderful, authentic old-world charm rare for Edmonton, with its history, brick, hardwood floors, antique tables, chairs and other decor, and there's alway…

Sugar Bowl is one of my favourite spots to hang out near the University of Alberta. It's on a scenic, tree-lined street, which creates an especially pleasant atmosphere.
