Planted in the middle of South Edmonton Common, one of North America’s largest open-air retail districts, it runs one of the busiest bar rooms south of the river: shakers going, music up, every booth mid-story.
The Story
JOEY began in Calgary in 1992 as Joey Tomato’s Kitchen, a pasta-and-pizza joint opened by Jeff Fuller, son of Earls founder Leroy “Bus” Fuller. Under executive chef Chris Mills the family’s brand went global — sushi, Asian bowls and steakhouse plates crowded in beside the Italian roots — and the name eventually shrank to just JOEY. South Common runs that full playbook at full volume, and locals treat it as the flagship of the city’s south end.
What to Order
Bar mode is the move here: sushi rolls and seared tuna to start, truffle fries for the table, then the steak frites or the blackened chicken that regulars refuse to let off the menu. The cocktail list is built for slow evenings — bartenders here shake, stir and torch things with genuine theatre — and the key lime pie is the agreed-upon closer.
The Space
Dark, glossy and low-lit, with a sleek lounge that flows straight into the dining room, so a quick drink escalates into dinner without anyone changing seats. It hums loudest on weekend nights, when the room feels closer to a party than a shopping-district restaurant has any right to.
