The first iteration of Rapid Fire was founded in Calgary by Keith Johnstone and the Loose Moose Theatre Company. In 1981, Rapid Fire was brought to Edmonton, marking the birth of the Edmonton League of Improvisational Theatre Arts. Its primary goal was to develop improvisational techniques in plays. Artistic director Jack Smith led the organization during its early days, with performances initially held at the Phoenix Theatre. Upon assuming her role, Patti expanded the company’s creative horizons by using improvisation to craft sketches and engaging scripts. Under her guidance, Rapid Fire began staging shows for adult audiences in 1993, including the globally acclaimed play Suspect: A Murder Game.

Additionally, in 1993, Rapid Fire Theatre joined forces with Teatro La Quindicina and Shadow Theatre to save Varscona Theatre from closure. Recognizing Varscona as a valuable venue for Edmonton’s performing arts, the companies collaborated to ensure its survival. This partnership allowed Rapid Fire Theatre to flourish, attracting large audiences to its performances and filling the theatre’s halls.

When Patti stepped down, Jacob Banigan took over as artistic director. During his tenure, Rapid Fire developed new plays, solidifying its reputation as an innovative theatre company. In 1995, Marty Chan produced the plays Something Dead and Evil Lurks in the Cemetery and I Think That’s My Dad under Rapid Fire’s banner. Jacob served as artistic director for nine years before stepping down, succeeded by Chris Craddock. Chris aimed to modernize the theatre, boost its popularity, and expand its roster of actors.

In 2008, Chris left Rapid Fire, and Kevin Gillese became artistic director. Kevin focused on nurturing talented actors and integrating video production into the theatre’s repertoire. However, by winter 2010, Kevin transitioned to a directorial role in New York City, leading to Amy Shostak taking the helm at Rapid Fire.

Amy significantly contributed to the theatre’s growth. In 2010, she prioritized actor development. In the fall of 2012, Rapid Fire left Varscona Theatre, relocating to the Citadel Theatre to expand its programming. The move allowed for weekly performances, festivals, and special events. In the same year, Rapid Fire launched a major fundraising campaign to acquire its own space and gain independence from the Citadel.

In 2015, Matt Schuurman assumed artistic leadership. He focused on the theatre’s growth, expanded weekly programming, and further developed the acting ensemble.

Rapid Fire’s Achievements

On the international stage, Rapid Fire Theatre (RFT) is renowned as a champion of improvisational comedy. The theatre’s actors frequently tour, earning accolades in Canada, the United States, and beyond. For decades, Rapid Fire has produced Improvaganza, Canada’s largest improvisational comedy festival. This 10-day event, held across two venues, features over 40 performers and attracts thousands of fans.

Notably, the theatre also creates productions for children. In 2018, the Royal Alberta Museum commissioned Rapid Fire to write and stage a play for young audiences based on the exhibition Whales. The result, When Whales Tell Tales, earned a nomination for the Elizabeth Haynes Award.

In addition, two more plays for children were commissioned. Among them was the rock musical Johnny Drops Out, designed for high school audiences. Commissioned by the Alberta government, this play also received the prestigious Elizabeth Sterling Award.

Rapid Fire Theatre boasts a fascinating and rich history.
